# The different roles on Benevolus

> Responsible, Coordinator, Volunteer: who can do what in a Benevolus organisation, and how to change a member's role.

In an organisation, every member has a **role**: **Responsible**, **Coordinator** or **Volunteer**. A role applies to one organisation only: you can be a Responsible in one and a Volunteer in another.

In this documentation, **organiser** means a Responsible or a Coordinator.

## Who can do what

Taking attendance requires the **Attendance management** module (see [Plans and pricing](/en/plans-and-pricing)).

## Organiser

### Responsible

The Responsible runs the organisation. Whoever creates an organisation becomes its Responsible.

* They create, publish and delete events. Publishing triggers billing where applicable, and the invoice is emailed to the person who publishes.
* They invite, import, export and remove members, and change their role.
* They manage the organisation's settings, plan and invoices (**Licences** tab).
* They can also do everything a Coordinator does.

### Coordinator

The Coordinator prepares and runs every event of the organisation, without deciding which events exist.

* They edit events, manage their sign-ups (opening, rest time, limits per post), notify members and remind those who have not signed up yet.
* They create, edit and delete posts and time slots, even after publishing.
* They designate post responsibles.
* They add or remove volunteers, even when sign-ups are closed or a limit is reached.
* They print schedules, take attendance, manage teams and write to members.
* They see draft events and members' contact details.

<Note>
  A Coordinator does not create, publish or delete events, and does not invite anyone. When a draft is ready, they ask a Responsible to publish it.
</Note>

## Volunteer

Anyone who joins an organisation is a Volunteer by default. A Volunteer picks their time slots and receives their roadmap.

* They see published events, their posts and their time slots.
* They sign up for a time slot while the event's sign-ups are open, within the limits set by the organisation.
* They can cancel a sign-up while sign-ups are open. After that, they let the organisation know: a Coordinator or a Responsible can remove them from the slot.
* They check their roadmap: post, time, place and contact of the post responsible.
* They see other members' names, not their contact details.

**Guides:** [Join an organisation](/en/join-an-organisation), [Sign up for a time slot](/en/sign-up-for-a-time-slot), [My dashboard and roadmap](/en/my-dashboard).

## Post responsible

A post responsible is not a role: it is a **designation** on a post, for the day of the event. A Coordinator or a Responsible makes it from the post (see [Create a post](/en/create-a-post)). Any member can be designated, even a Volunteer.

* Their phone number appears on the printed schedule and in the roadmap of their post's volunteers. If they have not given it yet, Benevolus asks them for it on their home page.
* On the day of the event, they take attendance for the time slots of **their** post, with the **Attendance management** module.
* They get no other right: a designated Volunteer stays a Volunteer.

<Note>
  Do not confuse the **Responsible**, who runs the organisation, with the **post responsible**, who leads a post on the day of the event.
</Note>

## Change a member's role

Only a Responsible can change a member's role. In the **Members** tab, open the menu on the member's card, then **Change role**, and choose **Coordinator** or **Volunteer**.

<Note>
  The app does not let you appoint another Responsible. To add one to your organisation, write to us at [info@benevolus.ch](mailto:info@benevolus.ch).
